We want everyone to be able to use this website and to visit the restaurant comfortably. This page covers the accessibility of our website and, separately, the physical accessibility of the restaurant at 41 Fore Street, Topsham.
Website accessibility
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. This means the site should be usable with a keyboard only, work with screen readers, and be readable without colour, with text resized up to 200%, and with animations reduced.
What we have done
- All images have descriptive alt text.
- Colour contrast has been checked against WCAG AA for all body text and interactive elements.
- The menu is published as HTML text — never as a PDF or image — so it is fully readable by screen readers and searchable.
- The site is navigable by keyboard. Skip-to-content links are included.
- Animated elements (the scroll indicator on the homepage) respect the
prefers-reduced-motion setting. - Form fields have visible labels and error messages.
- Language is set in the HTML (
lang="en").
Known limitations
- Our reservation widget is provided by a third party (ResDiary). We do not control its accessibility. ResDiary publishes its own accessibility information at resdiary.com. If you experience difficulty booking online, please call us on 01392 876078 or email fish@galleyrestaurant.co.uk and we will book your table directly.
- Gallery images use descriptive alt text where possible; some older images in the archive have limited descriptions. We are working to address this.
- Some PDFs linked from the site (such as press packs) may not be fully accessible. If you need the content in an alternative format, please get in touch and we will provide it.
Reporting a problem
If you find any part of our website difficult to use, please let us know. We take these reports seriously and will aim to address them promptly.
Enforcement
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) at equalityadvisoryservice.com.
Physical accessibility — the restaurant
The Galley is in a listed building on Topsham's historic Fore Street. We have done our best to make the space as welcoming as possible within the constraints of the building. Here is an honest account of what to expect.
Getting here
- Topsham is accessible by train (Topsham station, Avocet Line, 5-minute walk). The station has step-free access to the platform.
- Bus services from Exeter city centre stop on Fore Street.
- Disabled parking bays are available on Fore Street and at the nearby Topsham car park. Please contact us if you need more specific guidance on where to park.
Entrance and ground floor
- The restaurant entrance is on Fore Street. There is a small step (approximately 10 cm) at the front door. We have a portable ramp available — please ring the bell or call ahead and we will bring it out.
- The ground floor dining room and bar are on a single level once inside.
- Table spacing varies; we can usually arrange a more accessible table if you call ahead. Please let us know when you book.
Upper floor
- A second dining room is accessible via a staircase only. There is no lift. If you require a ground-floor table, please tell us when booking and we will reserve one for you.
Toilets
- Toilets are located on the ground floor. The accessible toilet has a wider door and grab rails. Please ask a member of the team if you need assistance locating it.
Hearing and communication
- The restaurant can be noisy during busy services. If you would prefer a quieter table, ask us when booking and we will do our best to accommodate you.
- Written menus are always available and can be provided in a larger font if requested — please ask when you arrive or in advance.
- We are happy to communicate by text or email if you find telephone calls difficult.
Dietary and allergy needs
Please see our allergen information page for full details on how we handle allergens and dietary requirements.
Guide and assistance dogs
Guide dogs and registered assistance dogs are always welcome throughout the restaurant.
Feedback on our accessibility
We want to keep improving. If your visit highlighted something we could do better — on the website or in person — please tell us. We read every message and take them seriously.
