Devon · from the Exe estuary to Dartmoor
The short answer

Devon has four Michelin-starred restaurants, and a longer list in the Guide.

Two sit in the county proper; two more are just over its modern borders, in Torbay and Plymouth.

In the 2026 MICHELIN Guide, the county of Devon holds two one-star restaurants: Lympstone Manor on the Exe estuary and Gidleigh Park on Dartmoor. Add the neighbouring unitary areas that still belong to historic Devon and there are two more — The Elephant in Torquay and Àclèaf in Plymouth — four one-star kitchens across the wider county. There is no two-star or three-star restaurant in Devon.

Below the stars, the Guide lists Bib Gourmand and recommended restaurants across the county. The Galley, in Topsham, is its Fish & Seafood entry on the Exe estuary, and has been in the Guide every year since 2021. What follows is the full picture, from the team who cook here.

One star

Devon's Michelin-starred restaurants.

Four one-star kitchens across the wider county, verified against the 2026 MICHELIN Guide. Ratings are revised each year — the Guide is the live source.

Lympstone · on the Exe estuary

Lympstone Manor

Michael Caines' manor-house hotel above the estuary near Exmouth, a few miles downriver from Topsham. Modern French cooking; one star. The nearest starred restaurant to Exeter, and the only one that shares The Galley's estuary.

Chagford · Dartmoor

Gidleigh Park

A grand Edwardian country house on the edge of Dartmoor, above the River Teign. Modern cooking built on top-quality produce, some of it foraged nearby or grown in the garden; one star.

Torquay · Torbay

The Elephant

Simon Hulstone's dining room overlooking Torquay harbour, with much of its produce grown on the restaurant's own farm. Modern British; one star, held for years.

Plymouth · Boringdon Hall

Àclèaf

Scott Paton's kitchen inside Boringdon Hall on the edge of Plymouth. Modern cooking; one star — the westernmost of the county's starred restaurants.

Bib Gourmand

Good cooking at a gentler price.

The Bib Gourmand is the Guide's mark for especially good cooking that won't run to a starred bill. In Devon for 2026 it goes to The Cornish Arms at Tavistock, Emilia at Ashburton, and Andria at Dartmouth — a gastropub, a modern British room, and a pasta-led Italian, respectively. The Galley held a Bib Gourmand of its own from 2021 to 2025 before moving into the Guide's 2026 selection.

Where The Galley fits

The MICHELIN Guide restaurant nearest Exeter.

The Galley has been in the MICHELIN Guide every year since 2021 — a Bib Gourmand from 2021 to 2025, and in the Guide's 2026 selection for its Fish & Seafood cooking. It doesn't hold a star, and doesn't claim one. What it holds is a spot the Guide has kept coming back to for five years running, four miles from Exeter on the Exe estuary.

That estuary is better company than it sounds: a few miles downriver sits Lympstone Manor, the county's nearest starred restaurant. The Galley is the more everyday end of the same water — day-boat fish from Brixham and Newlyn, cooked without fuss, on a Prix Fixe from £22 or à la carte. Michelin Plaque 2026 and an AA 1 Rosette; TripAdvisor's highest-rated restaurant in Topsham, 4.7 from 1,225+ reviews.

Frequently asked questions

How many Michelin restaurants are in Devon?

In the county of Devon, two restaurants hold a Michelin star in the 2026 Guide: Lympstone Manor near Exmouth and Gidleigh Park on Dartmoor. Counting the neighbouring unitary areas of Torbay and Plymouth, which sit within historic Devon, two more hold a star — The Elephant in Torquay and Àclèaf in Plymouth — making four in all. Alongside them, the Guide lists a number of Bib Gourmand and recommended restaurants across the county, including The Galley in Topsham, its Fish & Seafood entry on the Exe estuary.

Does Devon have a two or three Michelin star restaurant?

No. All of Devon's starred restaurants hold one star: Lympstone Manor, Gidleigh Park, The Elephant in Torquay and Àclèaf in Plymouth. There is no two-star or three-star restaurant in the county in the 2026 Guide.

Is The Galley a Michelin restaurant?
Yes, in the way that counts for the Guide: The Galley has been in the MICHELIN Guide every year since 2021 — a Bib Gourmand from 2021 to 2025 and in the Guide's 2026 selection, listed for its Fish & Seafood cooking. It does not hold a Michelin star. It is the MICHELIN Guide restaurant nearest Exeter, four miles from the city on the Exe estuary in Topsham.
Which Michelin restaurant is nearest Exeter?

For a starred restaurant, Lympstone Manor is closest — a few miles downriver from Topsham on the same Exe estuary, near Exmouth. For a MICHELIN Guide restaurant, The Galley is nearest the city itself: four miles from Exeter in Topsham, twelve minutes by train from Exeter Central.

What is the difference between a Michelin star, a Bib Gourmand and a Michelin Plate?

All three mean the Guide's inspectors have judged a restaurant worth including. A star recognises cooking worth a special journey — one, two or three, by how far. A Bib Gourmand marks especially good cooking at a gentler price. The Michelin Plate (or 'Selected') is the Guide's mark for a good restaurant in the selection without a star or bib. A restaurant can move between these as the Guide is revised each year.
